The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) yesterday has said it recently discovered and identified about 3500 male sex workers within the Abuja city centre. The agency added that it is worried by these figures because over 60 per cent of these men are married,raising the concern of spouse HIV transmission. At its maiden lecture yesterday to mark this year’s World AIDS day in Abuja with the theme- Strategies for Ending AIDS in Nigeria by 2030, the Director General of NACA, Professor John Idoko said the agency is now targeting hotspot areas in its drive to end the HIV epidemic. The running mate to late Abubakar Audu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Saturday’s governorship election in Kogi State, has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to declare him governor elect. James Faleke, in a November 26 letter to INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, insisted that under Section 187 of the 1999 Constitution, he was duly elected as deputy governor of Kogi State. President Muhammadu Buhari is deeply saddened by the “colossal calamity” which occurred Thursday in the Saudi Arabia, claiming the lives of hundreds of pilgrims, including some Nigerians. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said this in a statement yesterday. Shehu said Buhari had taken note of the assurance by the government of Saudi Arabia that Thursday’s catastrophe would be investigated. He said the president urged King Salman to ensure a comprehensive and thorough exercise that would identify any flaws in hajj organisation with a view to avoiding a recurrence of such tragedies during the annual pilgrimage. The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has barred the lawmaker representing Ondo-Central senatorial district, Senator Tayo Alasoadura, from attending South-West caucus meetings. The senator was reportedly ostracised for allegedly working against the interest of the party’s South-West leadership and for taking sides with Senate President Bukola Saraki. In a statement released by his media aide, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Tuesday evening, Mr. Saraki said he was singled out for prosecution because of his position as the Senate President – an apparent reference to the controversy over his election as leader of the Senate. Three women and 14 men arrested for sexual offences and gambling were caned in front of a mosque following Friday prayer. In one photo, a woman can be seen kneeling on a red platform as her back is whipped with a cane in front of guards and members of the public. Further images show men also being punished. According to DailyMail, Aceh is the only province in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country that is allowed to implement Islamic Sharia law. Justice Danladi Umar of the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Friday in Abuja ordered a bench warrant against the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, for failing to appear and answer charges over alleged false declaration of assets. The judge specifically ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase or other security agencies to arrest Saraki and produce him in court on Monday to take plea in the 13-count charge slammed on him by the Federal Government. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said it will partner with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to monitor the disbursement and use of the N338billion bailout funds released to about 27 states of the federation by the Federal Government. The President of the NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, said in a statement made available to The Nation in Abuja that it has directed all states councils in the benefiting states to serve as whistle blowers on any criminal diversion of the bailout funds. Senate President Bukola Saraki is likely to be arraigned on Friday before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) for alleged false assets declaration, it was learnt yesterday. The office of the Attorney General of the Federation has filed a 13-count charge against Saraki. The charges were endorsed by Muslim Hassan, a deputy director in the Federal Ministry of Justice. The allegations are under Section 2 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act. The offences are punishable under paragraph 9 of the fifth schedule of the Constitution. A senior official of the ministry yesterday told our correspondent that the arraignment would go ahead, barring any last-minute change. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, yesterday unveiled a wide scope of strategies for curtailing crimes, saying the police will henceforth work with communities and social groups. Speaking at a national security summit, organised by the Nigeria Police, in collaboration with The Sun Publishing Limited, Arase said the police would use traditional rulers, youth organizations, community-based associations, the media, women bodies and religious associations to tackle crimes in the society. The IGP noted that these groups that had been grossly underutilized were very strategic assets to the nation’s security.
